A Vampire's delight: Twilight convention in Toronto

Bring your fangs and capes — just leave the sunlight at home.

Several hundred fans are expected to converge at the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel this weekend for the first-ever Ontario Twilight convention, based on the multi-million dollar empire of vampire novels and films.

“It’s a three-day immersion into the whole Twilight saga,” said Gary Berman, co-CEO of Creation Entertainment, which puts on the convention.

“It’s become a social event for fans because they get to meet other fans from their area and people who have met online from various groups actually get to see each other.”

Twilight fans will be able to canoodle with seven dark forces in the series, including Chaske Spencer (Sam Uley), Alex Meraz (werewolf Paul) and Julia Jones (Eclipse’s Leah Clearwater).

Bronson Pelletier (werewolf Jared), Charlie Bewley (Volturi tracker Demetri) and Kiowa Gordon (Embry Call of the Wolf Pack) will also be there.

“I think it’s totally cool when you go to different countries, it’s entirely different but they all have one thing in common — they all like Twilight,” said Booboo Stewart, who plays the werewolf shapeshifter Seth Clearwater in the Twilight Saga and is set to appear at the convention.

“You have your grandmas, your moms and your daughters who all like the same thing. Every generation walks in the door. I’ve always been a fan of vampires since I watched From Dusk Till Dawn.”

Stewart said fans could inspire the actors and get them to try new things.

“One time I was on stage, someone asked if I had seen Star Wars or Harry Potter and I said, ‘No.’ Then this guy came by and he gave me his own copy of Star Wars: Episode One and now, I have almost all the Star Wars movies,” he said.

Fans will also get a chance to check out exclusive footage, panel discussions, Twilight themed parties, musical performances, costume and trivia competitions and auctions.

Some lucky faux vamps will even get a chance to sing karaoke with some of the Twilight celebrities.

“Friday night, they look at the songlist and Julia Jones, who plays Leah Clearwater in the film, hosts. Sometimes some of the stars come by and join and the fans get to sing and it’s a lot of fun,” Berman said.

The only other scheduled Canadian Twilight convention was held in Vancouver next May.

The convention runs from Friday to Sunday.
