Metric Talks About Being On The "Eclipse" Soundtrack!

Personal performances for heads of state aside, Metric’s influence has been rapidly expanding, due in no small part to their recent inclusion in films such as The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Film is a natural fit for the band, and has been an important part of their growth on the road trip to superstardom.

“We wrote the theme song for the Twilight movie with Howard Shore, the composer,” Emily continued. “The end of the movie is our song, written with him. He came to us saying, ‘Will you write a song with me?’ We needed to write the theme that culminates at the end of the movie, and then throughout the whole movie, you can hear that he took our melody that we wrote, and he has the strings playing it like seven times.” The result is a Twilightfilm, Eclipse, perhaps the best to date, that’s decidedly Metric-inspired.

“It was really nice to learn from him how the process works in composing. A very preliminary sort of glimpse, but that’s been exciting for me,” said Emily. “It’s always flattering when people ask you to do songs in a soundtrack, but it’s wholly another level when they ask you to write the score. That’s definitely something we’re interested in doing more of.”

'The Twilight Saga' soundtracks helping change the industry

Looking back on the way that the three Twilight series soundtracks have been composed, marketed, and revealed, there is certainly a trend.

With Twilight's soundtrack, artists like Paramore and Robert Pattinson contributed exclusive songs for the album, and they themselves became a part of the process - doing interviews, promotions, and the like. The same was true with The Twilight Saga: New Moon, whose feature band Death Cab for Cutie was the musical guest at the big Hot Topic New Moon event in California last year (which brought in nearly all of the cast). This year, it was METRIC which could be seen around, promoting the album for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, while The Bravery's Sam Endicott took on MySpace's Artist on Artist with Kellan Lutz and Peter Facinelli. In other words, album contributors become part and parcel of the Twilight Saga films with this franchise.

According to Variety, this is a major, bold shift in the soundtrack industry.

"The past decade has been so dismal many studios no longer release soundtracks, especially for films that emphasize previously released songs readily available on iTunes. There are some notable exceptions, . . . but nowhere has the value of exclusives been more evident than with the trio of 'Twilight' releases."

With Twilight, some of the songs on the album weren't exclusives. For instance, Muse's "Supermassive Black Hole" was a part of their 2006 album "Black Holes and Revelations." After the album's success, though, things changed a bit and songs placed on The Twilight Saga: New Moon's soundtrack were famously unique and exclusive to the album (even Muse's contributions to these albums).

"The success of the movie and the companion album (Chop Shop/Atlantic), which has sold 2.6 million copies in the U.S. alone, led to the decision to feature all new music from the likes of Radiohead's Thom Yorke, Muse and Grizzly Bear on the sequel, 2009's 'New Moon,' and third installment, 2010's 'Eclipse.' Those albums have sold 1.17 million and 395,000, respectively, to date," reports Variety.

Eclipse Soundtrack Hanging Tough On Billboard 200

The official motion picture soundtrack for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is sitting tough on the Billboard Top 200 list, resting at third place and considered the "greatest gainer" for the week of July 17, 2010.

The Eclipse soundtrack has been on the Top 200 for four consecutive weeks, waffling betwee a start in second place, a drop to sixth and the tenth, and now back up to third.

MTV wrote about the Eclipse soundtrack's continued success, noting that the number of units sold to achieve said gain were 65,000 (up 69%).

Chances are, the Eclipse soundtrack enjoyed a nice gain coming off of the film's theatrical release last week.

It's worth noting that The Twilight Saga: New Moon's official soundtrack debuted at number two on its first week on the chart (the week of October 31, 2009), jumped to number one the following week, and dropped to number eight (then ten for two weeks and back up to eight after the film's release). As such, Eclipse's heavy rise on the chart coming off of the film release is significant. Perhaps it has something to do with all of those well-placed songs?

EW Gives The "Eclipse" Soundtrack A Grade Of (B+) In It's Review

At this point, even the most entrenched haters of Twilight's vampire-sparkle voodoo concede the soundtracks' indie-rock bona fides — though they might wish the music came shrouded in a plain brown wrapper.

Like last October's New Moon collection, Eclipse operates as a sort of alt-party primer: original songs from the genre's current varsity squad, with a smattering of JV newbies. Pomp-rockers Muse, practically the movies' musical mascots by now, provide the requisite dose of Queen-meets-Rush grandiosity on ''Neutron Star Collision (Love Is Forever),'' while Jack White side project the Dead Weather revel in swampy blooze-ooze on ''Rolling in on a Burning Tire.'' Vampire Weekend, stripped of their habitual Afro-pop swaddling, work the harpsichord-tinged twee of ''Jonathan Low'' into a pleasingly woolly tangle, though Australian chanteuse Sia's ''My Love'' does more with much less — her fragile ballad is so ethereal and otherworldly, it should be sung in Elvish. U.K. indie-pop outfit Fanfarlo's rickety ''Atlas'' sounds like Talking Heads on a dirt-road detour; Beck and British songstress Bat for Lashes trade haunting echo-chamber 
vocals on the percussion-heavy duet ''Let's Get Lost''; and on the heady ''Heavy in Your Arms,'' Florence + the Machine make like Siouxsie Sioux leading a tribal marching band into battle. L.A. unknowns Eastern Conference Champions co-opt Radiohead's dense existential dread, Band of Horses conjure up another beardy folk ramble, and this summer's palest citizens get a pretty solid ready-made mixtape. B+

Last week, we learned that British rock lords Muse will return for a Twilight three-peat on the upcoming third soundtrack installment in as many movies for that obscure little book series (is it about werewolves? vampires? hobbits? We really can’t recall). Anyhow, MySpace tells EW exclusively that they will unveil the full soundtrack roster for Twilight: Eclipse, beginning Wednesday, May 12, at 11am EST/8am PST … and continuing on for many hours, at the rate of one band reveal every half hour. Muse has the first single on the Eclipse SoundTrack!!!

The first single on "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" has just been confirmed and I get to bring you the exclusive details. Stephenie's very favorite band, Muse, has contributed a song called "Neutron Star Collision (Love is Forever)" and it's the first single from the project. It will be out on May 17th. I haven't heard it yet, but I am very excited. The official soundtrack will also be available on June 8th. You can pre-order the Eclipse soundtrack here.
